  • Benchmark Plaintiff lists Mr. Olen as a "Local Litigation Star" in its Alabama rankings of personal injury attorneys. He has been listed in The Best Lawyers in America® since 1999.   • Mr. Olen serves on the Executive Committee of the Alabama Association for Justice and the Executive Committee of the South Alabama Trial Lawyers Association.  He is a member of the American Association for Justice, and is a past Treasurer, member of the Executive Committee and Chairman of the Civil Practice Committee of the Mobile Bar Association.

Pro bono/Community Service:

  • Mr. Olen serves on the Board of Directors of Alabama Appleseed, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving social justice for all.

Verdicts and Settlements:

  • Recently, Mr. Olen served as co-lead counsel for the Retirement Systems of Alabama on behalf of all bondholder plaintiffs in settlements with HealthSouth, UBS and Ernst & Young.  Defendants will pay over $226 million for fraudulent statements concerning HealthSouth’s finances.  The following language is required by Alabama Rules of Professional Conduct: "These recoveries and testimonials are not an indication of future results. Every case is different, and regardless of what friends, family, or other individuals may say about what a case is worth, each case must be evaluated on its own facts and circumstances as they apply to the law. The valuation of a case depends on the facts, the injuries, the jurisdiction, the venue, the witnesses, the parties, and the testimony, among other factors. Furthermore, no representation is made that the quality of the legal services to be performed is greater than the quality of legal services performed by other lawyers."  

Educational Background:

  • Mr. Olen graduated from Princeton University in 1976 and received his Juris Doctorate summa cum laude from Cumberland School of Law of Samford University in 1979. During law school he was Editor-in-Chief of The American Journal of Trial Advocacy, a member of Cumberland Law Review, and winner of the Moot Court Competition.
