It should come as no surprise that the lawyers at Gillin Jacobson Ellis & Larsen continue to be honored by their peers. Since 1972, the firm has built a reputation for excellence, integrity and creativity. The firm has obtained verdicts and settlements in excess of $180 million in the last four years alone.
“We still take pride in fighting for the little guy,” says partner Luke Ellis, noting that the firm’s partners began their careers in public service. The cases have gotten larger and more complex along the way, but that hasn’t changed the firm’s focus. The one-on-one relationship between attorney and client remains important to GJEL today.
To that end, the firm has become increasingly selective with respect to its caseload. “We’re very careful about the number and the type of cases we take,” observes partner Andy Gillin. “Catastrophic injury cases require extraordinary attention to detail. The only way to allow for that focus is to be extremely selective. Our discipline is to maintain a constant emphasis on quality over quantity.”
Ellis concurs. “Being selective is what allows us to maximize our creativity and intensity.” By keeping the firm’s caseload manageable, he explains, the attorneys are afforded the time to work every aspect of the case and to develop a personal connection with their clients. “That connection gives you extra fight and determination to overcome what would otherwise be the insurmountable resources that corporate defendants and insurance companies possess,” Ellis says.
GJEL limits its practice to personal injury and wrongful death cases. The attorneys take cases they believe in for people they care about. Each case that the firm selects is handled with extreme care and given the amount of time it needs and deserves. “We are certainly proud of the results we get,” Gillin says. “But we are more proud of the relationships we have formed and the people we have helped through the years.”
“We are honored to be included, and delighted with the reaction (to our advertising) we have received from our colleagues and clients.”

"My Platinum profile ad has definitely paid off! My law firm is a boutique five-attorney law firm in San Francisco that had never advertised prior to this, except in Martindale-Hubbel. We have been a traditional insurance defense firm, and wanted to subtly let people know that we also do select plaintiff's cases. In the last quarter of 2006, we were retained in three significant plaintiff's cases, two of which are high-profile media cases. I also placed an ad in the Super Lawyers section of San Francisco magazine, to reach non- lawyers. Now, people at the gym, the coffee shop, the drycleaners tell me they had no idea what I do, and they will come to me when they need a lawyer. So, the ad also worked to reach non-lawyers in the community as well."
