Successfully litigated some of the landmark United States cases in patent and environmental law. Best known for case against Genentech where Genentech was accused of infringing the University of California's pioneering patents in the DNA field. The case made national and international news when it was tried to a jury in San Francisco and settled for $200 million.
Won the AC Aukerman v. Chaides case en banc before the Federal Circuit, which is the seminal case on laches in the patent law field.
Also won jury verdicts in hostile venues on behalf of electronic, consumer product and software companies and settled a patent infringement case the day before trial on behalf of the University of California against Monsanto for over $200 million.
Prior to going into private practice, Chief Counsel for the Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health and Environment in the United States House of Representatives involved in drafting major health and environmental laws including the Clean Air Act, Safe Drinking Water Act and Hatch-Waxman Act. Headed up the congressional investigation of the Union Carbide disaster in Bhopal, India.
