John S. Peterson is recognized for his work in the area of eminent domain, inverse condemnation, landslide and subsidence, and business and real estate litigation. He is the founder and managing shareholder of Peterson Law Group in Los Angeles, California.
Lawyer John Peterson has been elected as a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates; eligibility requires completion of a prescribed number of jury trials and nomination and election by the membership, which includes some of the nation’s best trial lawyers. He has also has earned an AV rating* in Martindale-Hubbell and the Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers.
Attorney John Peterson has been featured as a speaker on eminent domain on local television and national radio shows, and has been quoted in the Los Angeles Times and the L.A. Business Journal on articles involving his cases.
Mr. Peterson has served as trial counsel in several successful jury trials. In one of those trials, he won a $10.5 million jury verdict in an eminent domain matter; the original offer was $5.4 million; and in another jury trial, he returned a $4 million verdict, while the original offer was $840,000.
Recently, Mr. Peterson won a $28 million result on behalf of an owner-client in an eminent domain case where the original offer was less than half that amount.
In a recent inverse condemnation matter on behalf of an owner-client, he achieved a $4.6 million result paid by the city for repair of a landslide where liability was disputed.

- Represented several single family homeowners that suffered differential settlement and resulting structural damage due to inadequate municipal drainage, consolidation and earth movement and resulting loss of support. Resolution included a buyout of one substantially damaged property and compensation to owners in other cases to address repair requirements.
- Represented hilltop single family home that suffered loss of substantial yard area due to landslide caused by fill soil instability. Resolution included buyout of property.
- Represented the owner of a bluff-top, ocean view estate that was substantially damaged due to loss of support caused by a road cut at the toe of the slope. After trial, the court awarded in excess of $3,000,000 as damages
- Represented adjacent single family homes downslope from a landslide that resulted in water and soil inundation and structural displacement of their homes. Damage caused by historic instability of hillside and water intrusion from utility conduits. Resolution included warranted hillside repair and structural repairs.
