Profile

Mr. Petrulis is a principal with Goodson Wachtel and Petrulis, a p.c., a tax and estate planning law firm, in Los Angeles, California. His practice focuses on: Estate Planning, Trust and Estate Administration, Conservatorships and litigated matters in the Probate Courts. Successful projects include rehabilitation of defective trust documents; retroactive funding of trusts to meet family objectives and IRS standards; recovery of trust property; and use of substitued judgment law to create estate plans for incapacitated adults.

He currently chairs the BHBF Rule of Law Competition, funded by Goodson Wachtel and Petrulis, which provides awards for learned papers submitted by law students on Rule of Law topics.  He is a Certified Specialist, Estate Planning, Trust and Probate Law, The State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization and a lecturer and author of articles on topics in the tax planning and administration of estates.

Mr. Petrulis earned his undergraduate degree in physics from Illinois Institute of Technology and, after serving as an officer in the USN, received his juris doctorate degree from the University of Illinois.

He is a former Chair of: the BHBA's State Bar Conference Delegation; the Conference's Calendar Coordinating Committee; the BHBA's Probate, Trusts and Estate Planning Section Chair of the Resolutions Committee; the BHBA Probate Trust and Estate Planning Legislative Committee; the BHBA Minority Diversity Committee, and a former member of the Board of Trustees of the Los Angeles County Bar Association.
  • Mr. Petrulis has authored and/or consulted on a number of legislative provisions, including Civil Code Section 682.1, Community Property with Right of Survivorship.
  • As the Chair of the Legislative Committee of the Beverly Hills Bar Probate Section, commencing in 1985, he participated in the Law Revision Commission's revision of the Probate Code and in legislative proposals in the areas of probate trust and estate planning. The Beverly Hills Bar Probate Section received recognition from the California Law Review Commission for its work.
