Martin Stuart focuses exclusively on the defense of individuals and entities accused of crimes in Colorado state and federal courts. Mr. Stuart defends clients against all criminal allegations, although his practice focuses on allegations of white collar fraud, sexual assaults, and drug conspiracies. Over the past fourteen years Mr. Stuart has tried in excess of 80 jury trials securing acquittals on charges ranging from first degree murder to forgery to sexual assault on a child.
Mr. Stuart’s experience also includes serving as president of the Colorado Criminal Defense Bar, an appointment to the Governor's Sentencing Commission's Task Force on Incarceration, and chairing the Colorado Criminal Defense Bar's Policy Committee.
Mr. Stuart began his legal career as a Colorado State Public Defender for nearly five years and then began a solo private practice until recently forming PortmanStuart. Mr. Stuart has represented clients in most jurisdictions across the state of Colorado, in the United States District Court for the District of Colorado, the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court. Since leaving the Public Defender’s office he has been named a Super Lawyer “Rising Star” in the 2009, 2010, and 2011, and a “Super Lawyer” for 2012.
Mr. Stuart is a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the Colorado Criminal Defense Bar, the Colorado Bar Association, the Denver Bar Association, and the United States District of Colorado Criminal Justice Act Panel. Mr. Stuart is admitted to practice in the state of Colorado, the United States District Court for the District of Colorado, the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, and the Supreme Court of the United States.
