Verdicts and Settlements: $3.4 MillionGoran Bakalar v. Royal Caribbean Cruises, Ltd.:  Miami Dade County Circuit Court Case No. 03-24475-CA 25.Date of verdict: May 19, 2006.  Amount of verdict:  $3.389 million.  Liability:  First Officer getting into a fast rescue boat by climbing down a fixed ladder at the port of Miami.  The ladder was broken.  Steps and falls back.  Jury found 100% negligence against the Defendant and 0% negligence against the Plaintiff.  Injuries:  Un-operated herniated disk at L 5 S1.  This is reported to be the highest award in the state of Florida and possibly in the United States for this type of injury by a multiple of approximately three.  The verdict is now a fixed judgment for over $3.4 million.   $1.733 MillionNancy Goodfellow v. Roadhouse Grill: Miami Dade County Circuit Court Case No. 99-17990 CA 30.  Date of verdict:  May 3, 2004.  Amount of verdict:  $1.733 million.  Liability:  Nancy Goodfellow went to get out of a booth at Roadhouse Grill and put her hand down on the booth seat.  The seat gave way because it was broken.  She jammed her hand against the underlying structures.  She severed a tendon and broke one bone.  No external injuries after several surgeries resulting in a partial fusion of the wrist.  $2.59 MillionAlexander Husni v. The Mandarin Oriental Hotel:  Miami Dade County Circuit Court Case No.  02-20744  CA  32.  Date of Verdict:  August 20, 2004.  Amount of verdict:  $2.59 million.  Alexander Husni was getting into the trunk his car in the "ramp" or front driveway in front of the hotel.  The valet parker retained by an independent contractor slammed into the back of the car causing crush injuries of the left knee requiring only one surgery and the insertion of one pin. Testimony about future medical care and treatment was that Mr. Husni would have to have a knee replacement in ten to fifteen years.  This is reported to be the highest award in the state of Florida and possibly in the United States for this type of injury.    $2.5 million recovered in Tampa, Florida for Honduran Seaman who suffered burn injuries on his hand and arm when a welder in a shipyard lit a paint can on fire and then spilled the paint on the Plaintiff;  $1.01 million recovered in Miami, Florida for a driver of a van hit by a tow truck where the Defendant alleged that the Plaintiff had been drinking prior to the accident ; $950,000.00 recovered inMiami, Florida in a sexual harassment case (confidential settlement);  $900,000.00 recovered in Miami, Florida for a student at the University of Miami who was a participant in a University sponsored and planned scavenger hunt which took place on Friday afternoon at 5:30 and required the students to cross 3 lanes of traffic to get one of the clues. The student/Plaintiff was hit by an uninsured car as she crossed the roadway. She suffered multiple orthopedic injuries; $650,000.00 recovered in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida for a woman who slipped and fell and re-injured her knee on which she already and had 5 arthroscopies. This injury required a sixth arthroscopy and a knee replacement; $500,000.00 recovered in Miami, Florida for a Honduran janitor against the company who rented out a ditch digging machine where operator presence switches in the handles were taped up when the machine was rented out, resulting in the machine running away and cutting into the legs of the Plaintiff requiring plastic surgeries;  $500,000.00 recovered in Miami, Florida in a medical malpractice case (confidential settlement);  $350,000.00 recovered in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida in a slip and fall on the grounds of a University which had placed a wooden ramp at the edge of a curb. The Plaintiff fell forward because of the ramp and fractured her arm requiring three surgeries;  $320,000.00 recovered in Miami, Florida in a Nicaraguan seaman's wrongful death case. The accident was an un-witnessed slip and fall which resulted in the injuries which rendered the seaman unconscious almost immediately after the fall, thus limiting the pre-death pain and suffering;  $315,000.00 recovered in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida for a pedestrian who was walking on the wrong side of the road when he was hit by a car; $275,000.00 recovered in Miami, Florida for a 64 year old woman who slipped and fell in a puddle of water on the floor in a bowling alley, suffering a fractured patella.
