Founding Partner SummarySTANN GIVENS is the founding partner in the firm. Stann has been licensed to practice law in Florida since 1974. He graduated from Bucknell University in 1971 and received his law degree from Florida State in 1973. He was born in Appleton, Wisconsin on February 20, 1950, but has lived virtually all his life in Tampa. Stann is Board Certified by the Florida Supreme Court as a Marital and Family Lawyer. Additionally, he is certified as a Family Law Mediator by the Supreme Court. He has lectured and written extensively on a variety of topics in family law practice. He is co-author of the Alimony chapter of the Dissolution of Marriage manual made available by the Florida Bar to its members. Stann is a fellow in the prestigious American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and was President of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers Florida chapter. He is a founder and executive director of the Family Law Inn of Tampa (American Inns of Court). Stann is active in both the Hillsborough County Bar Association and the Florida Bar. He has served as a member on a variety of committees within both organizations. Significantly, Stann has chaired the Marital and Family Law Certification Committee and a Grievance Committee for the Florida Bar. Locally, he has served as chair of the Hillsborough County Bar Association's Family Law Section, the Family Rules Committee, the Lawyer Referral Committee, and the Family Law Section Pro Bono Committee. Stann has been identified as one of the "Best Lawyers in America" since 1998 by the Woodward/White lawyer rating. Stann has always been active in the community. He is an elder in the Presbyterian Church and served as Moderator of the Permanent Judicial Commission of the Synod of the South. In that role, he was the chief judge of the appeals court for the Southeast within the Presbyterian Church of the United States of America. Within his local church, he created the Church Endowment Fund which will provide perpetual support for church benevolence programs. Stann has coached and served on the board of directors of numerous youth sports programs and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Tampa. He was one of the founders of the Gasparilla Distance Classic, the nationally recognized annual road race for all ages held each winter along Bayshore Boulevard in Tampa. He was awarded the Outstanding Community Service Award by the Boys Clubs of Greater Tampa and received an award for "Extraordinary Pro Bono Commitment" by The Spring, a shelter for abused women and children. Within the Tampa legal community he was the founder of the Family Law Inn of Tampa, part of the American Inns of Court. The Inns of Court concept was created in England more than a century ago to create a program where senior lawyers would mentor younger lawyers to pass on the tradition of the ethical practice of law. He is also a member of the Ferguson-White Inn of Court.
