Joel J. Bellows is the Founder and Managing Principal of Bellows and Bellows, P.C. For forty-five years, he has represented clients involved in business and employment litigation. Mr. Bellows offers business counseling, transactional, income taxation, and litigation services to U.S. and foreign business clients ranging from entrepreneurs, small and medium-sized businesses, to large corporations. Mr. Bellows' experience in complex commercial litigation includes a focus on regulated securities and commodity futures disputes. He has advised mass tort litigation firms in the training of attorneys to represent public customers and strategies involved in the successful prosecution of alleged broker fraud cases. Mr. Bellows has successfully represented clients in state, federal and appellate courts and in arbitration, mediation and regulatory proceedings before the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (formerly known as the National Association of Securities Dealers), National Futures Association, Securities Exchange Commission, Commodity Futures Trading Commission, Chicago Board of Trade and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. He has served as lead counsel in class actions, including a case reaching the U.S. Supreme Court. Currently a Ph.D. Candidate in Cognitive Political Economy and the Law at the University of Chicago's Harris School of Public Policy, Mr. Bellows is examining behavioral law and political economy to better understand how people and institutions view their interests and determine their optimal course of action. This line of inquiry provides an enhanced quantitative perspective to Mr. Bellows' litigation and business skills. The result is keen insight on how to best counsel business clients and develop innovative approaches to complex business matters. Although Mr. Bellows primarily focuses his practice on the litigation of business disputes in trial courts and tribunals, he has appeared before State and Federal Appellate Courts more than 40 times. Mr. Bellows is a student of mind mapping and has advised large corporations in litigation defense strategies through the use of demographics. Currently, Mr. Bellows is Lead Counsel in a civil rights case Zafra Lerman, PhD v. Columbia College of Chicago et. al. involving depravation of Academic Freedoms. Mr. Bellows received his J.D. (Tax) from The John Marshall Law School. He received his M.B.A. from the University Of Chicago Graduate School Of Business and his M.P.P. from the University Of Chicago Harris School Of Public Policy. He is admitted to practice in the States of California and Illinois, before the U. S. Courts of Appeal in the Second, Seventh and Ninth circuits and in trial courts across the U.S. Mr. Bellows is a member of the California State, Illinois State, Chicago and American Bar Associations.
