Born in 1961 in Washington, D.C., lawyer Jason A. Shapiro was drawn to the law early on in his life, when he won a mentorship program to work in Maryland’s Montgomery County State’s Attorney Office during his senior year in high school. That year, he learned and studied under some of the area’s most outstanding trial attorneys. However, he was not fully convinced to serve the law, as he was also drawn to boxing. He attended the University of Maryland with the intent of earning a place on the USA boxing team.
As it happened, Mr. Shapiro realized that he could have both of his loves – by taking the his competitive spirit out of the boxing ring and into the courtroom. After graduation from the U of M in 1983, he earned his law degree at the University of Baltimore School of Law, evening division, while working full time during the day.
Early on in his legal career, Mr. Shapiro earned recognition as an assistant state’s attorney in Howard County, handling everything from disorderly conduct to death cases and from agricultural misdemeanors to complex white collar felonies. As a criminal defense attorney, he has defended cases throughout Maryland and the Maryland Courts of Appeals. As a result of his brief related to worker’s compensation, the Maryland’s high courts to recognize that job-related carpal tunnel was a compensable occupational disease.
He is a partner with Paul E. Mack in the boutique litigation firm of Shapiro & Mack P.A., focusing on criminal defense, DUI and DWI defense, traffic violations defense, juvenile delinquency cases and personal injury concerns.
Mr. Shapiro was selected for inclusion in the Super Lawyers listing in 2009 and 2010, a listing that is created through a peer-review selection process. Maryland’s governor, the honorable Martin O’Malley, appointed Mr. Shapiro as chairman of the Trial Courts Nominating Commission, an impressive honor, as well.
Mr. Shapiro has been named a “Best Lawyer in America” in DUI and DWI and criminal defense every year since 2008 and is the only Howard County lawyer so named. Best Lawyers in America is a widely respected publication that conducts comprehensive peer review surveys of attorneys (more than 2.8 million responded in 2010) who confidentially evaluate their peers.
