Profile

As a young lawyer practicing in the Mississippi Delta from 1984 to 1988, Howard Bass organized that state's public defenders and was elected president of the Mississippi Public Defender Association. From 1988 to 2004, Howard practiced with Ron Meshbesher and Doug Thomson, two legendary Minnesota criminal defense attorneys, and was elected president of the Minnesota Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. In 2004, he opened the Bass Law Firm, a premier criminal defense firm south of the river. In 2007, as an ACLU-MN board member and volunteer attorney, Howard successfully challenged Minneapolis' illegal Photo Cop ordinance. As Lakeville South High School's mock trial attorney coach, he has taken his team to the state tournament and received the Minnesota Bar Association's Outstanding Professionalism Performance Award. Recognized by Minnesota Law & Politics magazine on the Top 40 Criminal Defense Super Lawyers list and by Minnesota Monthly as one of Minnesota's Best Lawyers, Howard is also listed in The Best Lawyers in America.
