Profile
Murray Schwartz has been actively and successfully practicing law and litigating for 60 years. More than 20 years ago, he directed the practice toward the specialty of employment discrimination; since that time, employment law has become the exclusive nature of the firm's practice. Mr. Schwartz's dedication to the field of employment law has resulted in ongoing accomplishments and awards as the firm's presence in this specialized field has increasingly expanded. Mr. Schwartz's daughter, Davida S. Perry, joined the firm in 1991 and in 1994, she earned her partnership. In 1998, Mr. Schwartz and the firm received an "AV" rating with Preeminence from Martindale-Hubbell, a rating which he and the firm have continued to receive every year. In 2007, 2008, 2009, and again in 2010. Mr. Schwartz was selected as a New York Super Lawyer. In addition, Mr. Schwartz was selected as a member of the Million Dollar Advocates Forum. Mr. Schwartz has written and lectured continuously and extensively on the field of employment law. He has appeared as a panelist at symposiums sponsored by various bar associations in New York and is a member of the faculty of the New York County Lawyers' Association and the New York City Bar Association. He also serves as a member of the Lawline.com faculty, lecturing on behalf of these associations to provide Continuing Legal Education credit to attorneys. Mr. Schwartz has also lectured before the Human Resources Association of New York (HR/NY). Under the direction of Mr. Schwartz, the firm developed a Summer legal internship program more than 10 years ago. It was so successful that it continued to expand every year. In 2010, the Summer internship program grew significantly so that 25 law students from nine law schools participated in the program. In 2011, the firm is expected to again mentor at least 25 law students from nine law schools in the New York and New Jersey areas. Mr. Schwartz was the lead Plaintiffs' counsel in a number of first impression cases which have had a lasting impact on employment law in New York. The 1991 New York City Human Rights Law was first challenged in Bracker v. Cohen, a case in which Mr. Schwartz represented the plaintiff and successfully argued in favor of the law's validity. Mr. Schwartz was again the lead trial and appellate attorney representing the plaintiff in the landmark case of Thoreson v. Penthouse Magazine and Robert Guccione, in which the claim of sexual harassment was established based on the victim's testimony alone. Mr. Schwartz also represented and served as the lead trial attorney for the plaintiff in McIntyre v. Manhattan Ford, Lincoln Mercury, a sexual harassment and retaliation case. The jury awarded the plaintiff $6.6 million, which, even after being reduced by the trial and then the appellate court, still stands as one of the highest awards for sexual harassment in the entire nation. Mr. Schwartz was also the lead trial attorney in a recent Federal court Retaliation suit in which a jury returned a verdict of $2.5 million, of which a portion was an award for punitive damages. After adding damages, interest and attorneys' fees, the amount of the final judgment paid totaled nearly $4 million.
