Accomplished attorney John J. Basso has had some of the largest jury verdicts and settlements in the Hudson Valley region, approaching each case with a dedication to the highest standards of his profession.   • Induction into 2011 Dutchess County Sports Museum Hall of Fame: Despite the rigorous demands of his law practice, John Basso devotes an enormous amount of his time to working with area youth. As co-founder of the LaGrange Youth Lacrosse league, he has guided the growth of this decade-old organization which currently involves over 300 boys and girls from kindergarten through 8th grade. Of the more than 2500 kids who have passed through this program, many go on to play on the Arlington High School level, which has been gaining widespread notoriety as a result of these players’ advanced skills. Recently retired from a ten-year stint as coach of the Arlington high school varsity and jv squads, he now helps kids get into college through lacrosse. At age 58, Mr. Basso, who made history as a member of the first National Championship College Lacrosse Team at Hobart College, still plays full contact lacrosse in tournaments throughout the year in Lake Placid, Fort Lauderdale, and most recently, in Hawaii.  The Dutchess County Sports Museum Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony was held on Oct 2, 2011 at the Knights of Columbus Hall on East Main St, Wappingers Falls, NY at 1 p.m., 2011

Pro bono/Community Service:

  • Member: The Sports Lawyers Association, a non-profit, international, professional organization whose common goal is the understanding, advancement and ethical practice of sports law and the recognition of substantial contributions to the advancement of sports through business and by involvement in charitable non-profit organizations.
  • As chair for the golf tournament for the Arlington Central School District Education Foundation, he contributes his time to produce major fundraising results for this cause.
  • He has also organized a highly popular legal education seminar for the general public at Dutchess Community College on a broad range of everyday topics to take the fear out of the law.
  • He has initiated free county-wide legal clinics for the general public which continue to this day to provide a reliable resource of information and advice when needed.
  • Founder and President of the LaGrange Youth Lacrosse Club serving 300 boys and girls in grades 3 through 8 with instructional and competitive lacrosse
  • Coach of Varsity and Junior Varsity Arlington High School Lacrosse Teams for over 10 years
  • Member of the Arlington Central School District Board of Education;
  • As president of the Dutchess County Bar Association, he instituted an accredited continuing education program for all attorneys endeavoring to keep their skills up-to-date, while personally organizing and offering seminars on trial practice and medical malpractice issues, two areas in which he excels.
  • In his “Scared Straight” Program, he teaches a class within the Drivers’ Ed program about safe driving, DWI and the law.
  • He has also instituted “shadow days” where he allows kids to come to court with him and regularly attends career days where students ask him questions about the law as a career.
  • In addition to serving on the Arlington School Board for six years, he is also the advisor of the newly formed Moot Court team, that teaches advocacy skills to high school kids who compete against other high schools in a mock trial.

Scholarly Lectures and Writings:

  • On the college level, he teaches Adult Education courses on mediation vs. litigation and products liability at Bard College, and for the Dutchess County and New York State Bar Associations.
  • Frequent Lecturer for Continuing Education Instruction in Trial Tactics and Use of Modern Visual Aids During Trial (video, powerpoint, medical exhibits, computer animations) given on behalf of the New York Trial Lawyers Association, Dutchess County Bar Association and National Business Institute.

Verdicts and Settlements:

  • THREE MILLION-DOLLAR CASES IN 2011    1. John Basso secured a binding Arbitration award from a New York State Insurance arbitrator in the amount of $1,000,000 for a truck driver who swerved from a car running a stop sign resulting in a neck fusion injury and total disability.   2. John Basso also represented a woman from Ulster County, NY who was broadsided by a NYCwater truck that was servicing the upstate reservoirs. With a crushed ankle and femur, she underwent three operations which ultimately saved her leg from amputation. Basso Law started the trial with video-taped testimony from the orthopedic surgeon in Albany to be played at trial in NYC. The case settled prior to trial for $1.1 million.   3. John Basso's final case in 2011 involved a construction worker who fell from a beam 20 ft. above the ground due to a lack of scaffolding and safety harnesses. He suffered a very severe brain injury along with multiple fractures and is now totally disbaled. Mr.Basso secured a hard-fought recovery of $2.1 million.

Guests have included Town, Supreme, and Appellate court judges and New York State Court of Appeals justices; lawyers; New York State Senators; U.S. Congressmen/women; and administrative agency directors.
