In 2000, 10 talented attorneys decided to form a sophisticated practice catering to blue-chip clients. And they have done just that. Today, the firm—which has offices in Raleigh and Greensboro—counts more than 30 Fortune 500 companies among its clients.
The founders also set out to attract leading attorneys in their respective practice areas. Again, they succeeded. A remarkable 10 of the 29 attorneys have been named to the North Carolina Super Lawyers® list, including new lateral partner, and legendary litigator, J. Donald Cowan Jr.
The firm is also attracting young talent from major metropolitan areas. George F. Sanderson, recruited from New York’s Boies Schiller, has been named to the Rising Stars list.
THE RIGHT RESULTS
Cowan—a litigator with a special emphasis on commercial cases, intellectual property, products liability and medical products—has tried jury cases in state and federal courts in North Carolina and other jurisdictions. He’s represented Fortune 500 companies in class action and antitrust cases, as well as criminal defendants charged with capital crimes.
Cowan’s considerable experience complements the firm’s litigation practice, which includes complex business litigation, criminal law and business crimes defense, tort and insurance cases, and pharmaceutical and medical devices. Practice areas also include real estate matters, such as land use, business development and residential development.
The firm has handled some of North Carolina’s most important disputes and transactions, including a $424 million state Supreme Court victory and a $100 million corporate acquisition.
THE RIGHT PEOPLE
It’s easy to see why more than half the firm’s attorneys have been named to Business North Carolina’s Legal Elite, and many are also recognized in The Best Lawyers in America.
Together, the 29 lawyers offer a comprehensive knowledge base that benefits all the firm’s clients. Considered experts in their fields, the firm’s lawyers often give lectures on relevant issues. And as published authors, they’re well-known among readers of trade journals.
The attorneys’ skills are not limited to the practice. They’ve served on the boards of numerous organizations, including the Cary Chamber of Commerce, the Raleigh Chamber of Commerce, the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics Foundation and the Downtown Raleigh Alliance.
Whether they’re in the courtroom, the boardroom or in the community, the attorneys at Ellis & Winters LLP are determined to make a difference.
