ADVOCATE FOR JUSTICE
Bill Powers is a committed advocate for clients in North Carolina who is known as a hard-nosed veteran of the courtroom. “My goal is to fight to the best of my abilities, while also being courteous to my opponent,” Powers says. “There is a way to be both zealous and polite. It’s something I work on every day.”
TECHNOPHILE
A partner at the Charlotte-based law firm Bush & Powers, Powers primarily focuses his practice on DWI and other traffic-related matters. Though he spends most of his time in the courtroom, Powers keeps up in the classroom, too. “I’ll admit, I’m a bit of a technophile,” he says. After teaching a series of continuing legal education courses on the law, science and technology of breath testing, Powers lays claim to a broad knowledge of the AlcoSensor, Intoxilyzer and EC/IR II. “Clients’ futures depend on machines, and if you want to ensure a machine is working properly, you have to know how it works,” he says.
STATEWIDE DWI PRACTICE
“My best career decision has been to focus on DWI-related cases,” he says. “I absolutely love traveling throughout the state helping people.” Although North Carolina courtrooms may be dynamically different, the law is the same. “Sometimes being an ‘outsider’ is just what the doctor ordered,” he says.
A LAWYER AND A TEACHER
Although he appreciates the uniqueness of having an in-depth knowledge of a niche area of law, Powers makes a point to share what he knows. “We get calls on a daily basis from attorneys around the state about DWI law,” he says. “That is truly one of the most rewarding aspects of my professional life. I’ll do whatever it takes to help.” His peers obviously appreciate his effort, as they’ve nominated him to this year’s Super Lawyers® list. “I’m certainly going to do my best to live up to the honor,” he says. “Being included in Super Lawyers is a great professional compliment.”
PASSION FOR CLIENTS
Powers views his job as an opportunity to counsel clients through difficult times. “My passion is to help people, not judge them,” he says. “I take my responsibility seriously. People trust me with their worries, concerns and lives. I absolutely must be there for them.” For Powers, it’s that simple.
