James D. Owen is the founder and managing partner of The Owen Firm, LLC, a Columbus, Ohio, law firm providing criminal defense in both state and federal courts. Mr. Owen has been admitted to practice in Ohio's courts since 1979. His record of high-profile acquittals dates back nearly as far and includes the 1986 acquittal of Donald Harriston, who was charged with murdering a prominent Columbus, Ohio, businessman and high-profile political figure. Owen then won two more high‑profile murder cases in the trials of Anthony Hollman and William Berry. Owen is best known, however, for his work in helping free two Columbus men, Timothy Howard and Gary James, who were both sentenced to death for a robbery and murder at an Eastside Columbus bank. Over the course of his career, Mr. Owen has also represented judges, an NFL football player, a former U.S. Congressman and other elected officials.
