Profile
Mark W. Tanner is an accomplished trial attorney with a wide ranging practice in complex litigation. In addition to securing one of the largest medical malpractice verdicts in the courts of Pennsylvania, Mr. Tanner has also secured what is believed to be the largest jury verdict in Pennsylvania in a bad faith case against an insurance company. Mr. Tanner has been appointed by the Court as liaison counsel in mass tort litigation in both Pennsylvania state and federal courts, including the Orthopedic Bone Screw litigation and the Diet Drug litigation, in which he served as sub-class counsel. His practice interests include medical negligence, disability insurance claims, insurance bad faith, product liability and class action litigation. Mr. Tanner received a B.A. in English Literature from the College of the Holy Cross, and received his law degree with honors from Temple University School of Law. At Temple, he received awards in the fields of trial and appellate advocacy. Recognized for four consecutive years by Philadelphia Magazine as one of the top 100 "Super Lawyers" in Pennsylvania, Mr. Tanner was named among the Top 10 Super Lawyers in Pennsylvania in 2008, 2009 and
2010. In 2010, the Superlawyers magazine ran a feature article describing his success at trial. In 2006, Mr. Tanner became one of the youngest attorneys ever invited to become a Fellow of the prestigious International Academy of Trial Attorneys (membership is limited to 500 lawyers). He has also been selected for membership in the
American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA), and is certified as a Civil Trial Specialist by the
National Board of Trial Advocacy. Since 1997, Mr. Tanner has served continuously on the Board of Directors of the
Philadelphia Trial Lawyers Association, becoming their President in July 2007. He often serves as a faculty member in programs devoted to the development of trial advocacy skills, and teaches at Temple University's Academy of Advocacy. In 2007 he was also appointed to the Board of Directors of the non-profit Support Center for Child Advocates. Mr. Tanner has won over $50 million in jury verdicts in the Pennsylvania courts, and has secured even more for his clients by way of settlement of claims in Pennsylvania and around the country. He is frequently called upon by other lawyers to take over cases prior to trial when it becomes clear the case will not settle and needs to be tried to verdict.
