Profile

Since 1984, Bickel & Brewer has successfully represented clients confronting matters that involve substantial business exposure, cutting-edge legal issues or significant public-policy questions. The attorneys named to Texas Rising Stars continue Bickel & Brewer’s tradition of being among the world’s leading law firms practicing “bet-the-business” litigation and dispute resolution.

“A signature trait of our firm is its assembly of young professionals who possess the talent, drive and ambition to handle high-stakes advocacy,” says partner Michael L. Smith. “What fuels our attorneys is our clients’ vote of confidence in selecting and trusting us to handle their most important matters.”

The firm’s commitment to excellence is evidenced not only in the caliber of its professionals, but also in the strategic tools it employs—providing clients every competitive advantage possible. The firm is a pioneer in the development of alternative-fee arrangements. It also boasts a mock courtroom, and in-house investigation and public relations units. Bickel & Brewer has been widely recognized as the first firm to develop an offshore operation to cost-effectively convert case-related information into electronic databases.

FIRST IN SERVICE

Bickel & Brewer is equally passionate about serving the community. The Dallas Business Journal recently recognized Bickel & Brewer as one of the “Top Ten Corporate Philanthropists” in Dallas-Fort Worth and the area’s most philanthropic law firm. All of the firm’s professionals, on average, donate at least 200 hours per year to the firm’s public service legal affiliate, the Bickel & Brewer Storefront. The Storefront is involved in a wide range of matters affecting individuals and communities in need. For example, the Storefront is successfully challenging the illegal “immigration ordinances” proposed in the Dallas suburb of Farmers Branch, Texas. The case has become one of the nation’s most closely watched disputes relating to the issue of immigration.

“The case has impacted the national debate on an important issue of public policy,” says partner C. Dunham Biles. “Employing our skill sets in these types of community-impact cases is part of what makes practicing at Bickel & Brewer so rewarding.”

Complementing the Storefront is the Bickel & Brewer Foundation, which manages a number of local and national educational programs. The Bickel & Brewer Future Leaders Program (FLP) lights a path to college for students from the Dallas Independent School District. The most recent graduating FLP class of nine received more than 40 college acceptance letters and earned more than $1 million in scholarship offers.

“The value of this firm is seen in not only the way it practices law, but also the manner in which it serves the community,” says senior associate Eric P. Haas. “There is the feeling here that you are part of something special.”
