The past year has brought significant changes to the legal community in Texas and beyond. Big law firms sent lawyers packing in order to cut costs while many plaintiffs’ lawyers responded to tort reform measures by retooling their practices in hopes of finding more profitable work.
But little has changed at The Lanier Law Firm, where firm founder Mark Lanier and his team of experienced courtroom lawyers continue to rack up substantial verdicts and settlements from offices in Houston, Los Angeles, New York and Palo Alto.
From negotiating a worldwide settlement on behalf of one of the country’s largest trade groups to helping guide nationwide lawsuits involving a variety of prescription drugs, Lanier continues his work with enthusiasm and expertise that has earned him another selection as one of the Top 10 attorneys in Texas on the Texas Super Lawyers® list.
“Although everybody is cutting back these days, we will never change our approach to helping clients,” says Lanier. “It’s more important now than ever for people to know they have someone in the legal system who will be looking out for them when there’s a lot on the line.”
One example of Lanier’s care for clients came in the firm’s recent settlement negotiated with the NCAA on behalf of the family of a Rice University student athlete who collapsed after football practice and later died from complications related to sickle cell trait. Under the settlement, the NCAA recommended for the first time that all student athletes be tested for sickle cell trait – a measure designed to save lives for years to come.
In addition to handling virtually every type of serious injury claim, Lanier continues to expand his firm’s role in important business litigation on behalf of some of the world’s most recognizable companies, including cases involving contract disputes, false advertising claims and intellectual property litigation, among many others. Lanier recently gained national headlines by going up against video game giant Nintendo on behalf of a small technology company from Ohio.
“The Nintendo case is a good example of what our firm is all about,” Lanier says. “On one side, you have a giant company that everyone knows has millions of dollars to spend on a lawsuit. On the other side, you have a small business that’s fighting for what’s right. We’ve put together a pretty good track record for the guys on the right side, and we’re not planning on changing a thing.”
