Profile

Joe Stephens was born and raised in a small town in Oklahoma before moving to Houston where he represents the injured, the poor, and the downtrodden.    He is  known as a "Lawyer for the People" because he strives for truth, justice, and freedom in their behalf.   He is double board certified. On the national level, he is Board Certifed in "Civil Trial Law" by the National Board of Trial Advocates. In Texas, he is Board Certified in "Personal Injury Trial Law" by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.  In the past 26 years, he  has tried over 100 jury trials involving personal injury and wrongful death.  He has won many important trials which have received national media attention.  These include sensational wrongful death victories in the  "Clara Harris"  case, and the "Alamo Quarry Mall" negligent security case.  Recently,  he tried a case for four children and obtained what is said to be the largest jury verdict in the history of Montgomery County in a personal injury case. (currently being reviewed by the Texas Supreme Court).  The nationally recognized publication,  "Verdict Search" has chosen four of his cases in  recent years as the "Verdict of the Week," for the  entire State of Texas.  He is a member of the Trial Lawyer's College,  an elite group of "Trial Warriors for the People" chosen by famed lawyer Gerry  Spence.  The small group trained under Spence's direction for weeks at Spence's Wyoming Ranch.  In 1999, the American Association of Justice (AAJ) which is the world's largest trial bar elected him as its "Most Outstanding Young Trial Lawyer."  (The "F. Scott Baldwin Award"). Due to numerous qualifying jury awards, he earned membership in the  Million Dollar Advocate's Forum. Based on his ethics and skills, Martindale Hubbell has repeatedly given  him its highest rating ("AV").  America's largest independent attorney rating service gives him its top rating of Superb, 10/10 based on ethics, skills, industry recognition, awards, and success.   In 25 years of practice, he has never had a client file a grievance against him. Finally, Mr. Stephens has argued numerous cases before the Texas appellate courts. In 2007,  he argued an important wrongful death  case before the Texas Supreme Court asking them to  uphold a $6.5 million dollar jury award.  In 2009, he successfully presented another  case to   the Texas Supreme Court, which  granted relief  in favor of his clients, minor children who had been brutally attacked by a sexual predator.  In 2010, he won another big award in a  jury case against a drunk driver.  Additionally, he won a medical malpractice  case against St. Luke's Hospital, said to be the first victory in Harris County against St. Luke's.  Recently, in 2011 Mr. Stephens and Tommy Hastings tried a medical malpractice case against a doctor and medical clinic who caused the wrongful death of their client due to prescription errors.  The Defendants offered no monies  before trial.   The jury returned a verdict of $10.7 million dollars.
