Mr. Byrd is the Chairman of SettlePou's Business Counsel Services section. Business Counsel Services is comprised of three practice groups: (1) Health Law; (2) Private Business; and (3) Family Wealth and Estate Planning. The services provided by the Health Law group and the Private Business group can be best summarized as providing outside counsel to physician medical practices and medical related businesses and other mostly privately held businesses. The scope of this business representation covers business entity planning, mergers and acquisitions, regulatory compliance (particularly with private securities and health law regulations), contracts, real estate issues, and employment issues. Mr. Byrd brings a unique perspective to his business counsel, as his career started as a business litigator. Though Mr. Byrd still litigates for his business clients, he also uses this experience to help quantify risks for clients as they negotiate language in agreements or make business decisions that carry a risk. Additionally, Mr. Byrd, through speaking engagements annually at UT Southwestern Medical school and Continuing Medical Education seminars on the business of medicine, has a national base of physician clients. Mr. Byrd assists both the national and local physicians in the planning for bringing in new doctors and retiring doctors, as well as investments in ancillary businesses (such as surgery centers, imaging centers, and medical office buildings). Mr. Byrd represents clients in the business, technology, real estate, and professional services sectors through the Private Business group. In conjunction with his role in the Private Business group, Mr. Byrd has been entrusted to serve as outside business counsel for law firms and accounting firms. Mr. Byrd's role with the Family Wealth and Estate Planning group, other than his leadership duties as Chairman of the section, is focussed on assisting with business succession issues and establishing entities for asset protection purposes with physicians and executives. Mr. Byrd is AV rated by Martindale-Hubbell.
