John D. McGavin was selected as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers in 2009 in recognition of his experience and achievement as a preeminent trial lawyer. He is a past President of the Virginia Association of Defense Attorneys, a Fellow of the Virginia Law Foundation, and a member of the Boyd Graves Conference. He routinely handles large and complicated litigation in state and federal courts throughout Virginia. As National Counsel for several insurance companies and self-insureds, he has gained a reputation as a skilled trial lawyer. With over 300 jury verdicts, there are few lawyers with his depth of experience or success. In addition, he has many reported cases from the Supreme Court of Virginia, including John v. Im; Covel v. Town of Vienna; Sunrise v. Wright.  He is recognized as a Super Lawyer in Virginia and Washington, DC.

  • Mr. McGavin was honored by The National Insurance Crime Bureau for contributions to a National investigation coordinated with the US Justice Department and the State Attorneys General of several states leading to the successful indictment and prosecution of individuals engaged in a National scheme to defraud insurance companies.

Scholarly Lectures and Writings:

  • Mr. McGavin is a frequent lecturer who has spoken to seminars sponsored by the plaintiff's bar and the defense bar.  Currently, he serves on the faculty of the Virginia State Bar Professionalsim Course and presents lectures 2 times per year on Professionalism.

Verdicts and Settlements:

  • Also, in the calendar year 2010, Mr. McGavin has successfully litigated a number of cases.  Some examples are:   Mr McGavin tried to verdict the case of Hawvermale v. Best Buy, involving a trip and fall at a Best Buy store with over $100,000 in medical bills.  The jury verdict was for the defendant, Best Buy. Mr. McGavin tried to verdict the case of Thomas v. Bowman, a veterinary malpractice action, that resulted in a verdict for Mr. McGavin's client. Mr. McGavin tried to verdict a premises liability action involving a dog and catastrophic injuries to a plaintiff in the Circuit Court of Arlington County, which resulted in a defense verdict for Mr. McGavin's client. Mr. McGavin successfully defended Dr. Paul Offit in defense of a defamation action in the US District Court of Virginia in Alexandria.  The trial court granted a 12 b 6 motion to dismiss. Mr. McGavin successfully defended Dahn Yoga in a RICO action in US District Court in Alexandria.  After motions to dismiss were granted in favor of Mr. McGavin's client, the case was settled on confidential terms.  
  • In 2010, Mr. McGavin tried the highly publicized case of the Estate of Reynolds v. Emerald Island. The case arose out of a double fatality in Smith Mountain Lake.  Mr. McGavin obtained a defense verdict on a jury trial on a plea in bar.  The case was widely reported in the newspapers in the Roanoke, VA area.

  • In 2010 Mr. McGavin served as the American College of Trial Lawyers committee co-chair on their Regional Trial Competition.  The program was held in Virginia Beach.  He served as a Judge, and Program coordinator for one of the largest Trial practice programs in the country.
