Profile

After being in private practice for 6.5 years, Lisa W. Gafken has returned to the Washington Attorney General's Office, where she began her career in 2001.  Her initial assignment with the AGO was with the Utilities and Transportation Commission Division, where she spent four years.  During her time in private practice, Ms. Gafken focused on litigating trust and estate matters under TEDRA, protecting vulnerable adults under Chapter 74.34 RCW, and representing clients in both contested and uncontested probate and guardianship matters.  She was first an associate attorney, and then became a partner in her own firm.  Ms. Gafken now serves as an Assistant Attorney General with the Public Counsel Section, which represents customers of investor-owned utilities in proceedings before the Utilities and Transportation Commission. She is a member of the Washington State Bar Association, the King County Bar Association, and Washington State Association for Justice, and is a board member of MAMAS, the Mother Attorneys Mentoring Association of Seattle.

  • Seattle Skyline Rotary2008-2009.  As a member of Rotary, I helped to raise funds to erradicate polio and drill water wells in Africa.
  • Lawyers Fostering Independence - Group of attorneys who provides legal services to youth aging out of foster care.  Issues can range from sealing juvenile records to employment issues to parenting plans to benefits.  The program is run by the Center for Children and Youth Justice.  To date, I have accepted 4 cases, all involving sealing juvenile records., 2008

Other Outstanding Achievements:

  • I served as one of three co-directors who planned the Annual Luncheon for MAMAS, at which we honored Justice Debra L. Stephens with our Leadership and Justice Award.  The luncheon was held on October 8, 2009 at Seattle's historic Olympic Fairmont Hotel., 2009
  • I served as one of four co-directors who planned the annual event for MAMAS.  The successful event was held at the W Hotel in downtown Seattle and had more than 250 attendees.  William Gates, Sr., gave the introduction for our Leadership and Justice Award recipient, Connie Collinsworth., 2010
  • I served as one of four co-directors who planned the annual event for MAMAS.  The successful event was held at the W Hotel in downtown Seattle and had more than 250 attendees.  Our honoree was Judge Betty Binns Fletcher, who was introduced by two of her children., 2011
