Discovery with Hinda Klein

Hinda Klein, head of her firm’s appellate department, has a talent that confounds courtroom foes: If it’s committed to writing, it’s committed to memory.

My nickname is … Hindi.

I can’t go a day without … coffee with chicory ordered from the Café du Monde in New Orleans.

My colleagues would be surprised to know that … when I was in law school, I swore I would never go to court.

When I was a newbie lawyer I … would shake at motion calendar hearings and hyperventilate at records-custodian depositions.

The lawyer I most admire is … David Boies. He’s a rock star in my book.

The quality I most like in a lawyer is … someone who doesn’t take themselves too seriously and who treats other attorneys with respect.

My pre-trial routine is … nonexistent. Nothing I do is routine.

When I started, I wish I knew … when to shut up.

My career high point (so far) has been … making equity partner.

If I weren’t a lawyer, I’d be … a novelist.

When I win a case, I celebrate by … moving on to the next one.

The SCOTUS justice I’d like to meet is … Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

My favorite Twitter feed is … none. I hate Twitter.

I can’t believe more people haven’t read … anything by Pat Conroy or David McCullough.

I can do a pretty good impersonation of … absolutely no one.

My fictional hero is … Atticus Finch, at least in To Kill a Mockingbird.

My real-life hero is … Frank Lloyd Wright. Or Teddy Roosevelt.

On weekends I …  catch up on really bad TV and let my brain rest.

My most bizarre talent is … when I write things longhand (which I still remember how to do), I’m able to commit them to memory.

The talent I wish I had is … wit, like Dave Barry.

On my worst day I … lose a motion or a case for reasons entirely unrelated to the merits.

On my best day I … get so absorbed in my work and remember why I became a lawyer.
