Discovery with Kwabena Appenteng

Kwabena Appenteng on crisps, fatherhood and his stellar Kwabena Appenteng impersonation

Published in 2018 Illinois Super Lawyers — February 2018

My nickname is … Growing up with the Ghanaian name “Kwabena,” there’s been quite a few!

I can’t go a day without … kissing my infant son.

When I was a newbie lawyer I … reminded myself daily that I had a lot to learn, didn’t try to pretend otherwise, and worked hard to learn as much as I could as quickly as I could.

The quality I most like in a lawyer is … civility. It’s remarkable to me how rare of a quality it is in private practice.

When I started, I wish I knew … how much the legal-services industry would change in the decade to come.

If I weren’t a lawyer, I’d be … a teacher.

On my best day I … learn something new that will enable me to better counsel or represent clients.

I get angry when … I’m forced to put out a fire and resolve a significant issue in an unreasonable amount of time.

The SCOTUS justice I’d like to meet is … Justice Kennedy.

A different practice area that intrigues me is … intellectual property.

My favorite Twitter feed is … The International Association of Privacy Professional’s Daily Dashboard: @DailyDashboard. It’s an easy way to keep up with the myriad privacy law developments each week around the globe.

I can do a pretty good impersonation of … a Ghanaian guy who was born and raised in the north of England who now lives in Chicago.

On weekends I … ensure I spend time each day being a kid with my kid.

The most fascinating person I ever met is … my dad. He’s also, without question, the smartest person I’ve ever met.

My guilty pleasure is … salt and vinegar crisps (aka “chips”), and Cadbury Dairy Milk Fruit & Nut.

If I had a time machine, I would … not use it!

If I won the lottery I’d … focus on philanthropic efforts in villages and smaller towns in Ghana.

The most annoying thing about my job is … that I cannot ever get ahead! Which I suppose is a good problem to have.
