The Houston attorney tells us what’s good in the neighborhood

Published in 2016 Texas Super Lawyers — October 2016

Favorite building: As a trial lawyer, I focus a lot on the use of technology to help my clients win. So, while I don’t enjoy shopping in a physical store, I love the beautiful, open, virtually all glass Apple Store in Highland Village. It is one of the coolest buildings in Houston.

Favorite city event: For the last 11 straight years, I have ridden my road bike 170 miles from Houston to Austin each April for the BP MS 150 bike ride, which raises money for research to fight multiple sclerosis. Our team at Susman Godfrey has raised over $1 million for the event over the years, and as a team captain for 10 years, I spend all winter training on the weekends and then ride this stunning course through West Houston and the Texas Hill Country.

Go-to arts venue: No question: Houston’s Alley Theatre—one of the finest resident company theatres in the United States. I serve on the board, and we just completed a massive $55 million capital project to completely revamp the main theater space. We have a great longtime artistic director in Greg Boyd and a fine group of resident actors. If you are in town, you need to catch one of our performances. You won’t regret it.

Place to take out-of-town guests: I love science and technology, so I frequently take folks to the Houston Museum of Natural Science in Hermann Park. Given the energy business in our town, this museum has an amazing, very hands-on series of exhibits about the formation and extraction of petroleum products as well as some cool collections for the kids. And it also happens to be the location where my wife and I got married 23 years ago. Another one of the gems in our great city.

Favorite city sports moment: Game 4 of the National League Division Series [in 2005], Astros versus Braves, at Minute Maid Park, which went 18 innings before the Astros won to go to the NLCS and then to their first and only World Series. I was there with my dad and two sons and we cheered and rallied the entire game. A great moment for my family and the Astros.
