Local Counsel with Claire L. Rootjes

Seattle litigator Claire Rootjes tells us what’s good in the neighborhood.

Favorite watering hole  -  Radiator Whiskey. Just know that going back to the office to “get some more work done” is a pipe dream.

Favorite restaurant -  Brave Horse Tavern. Shuffleboard, soft pretzels, and only partially overrun by Amazon employees (OK, mostly overrun).

Weekend getaway -  San Juan Islands. I think Seattleites are contractually obligated to involve a ferry in their weekend getaways.

Favorite historical fact about Seattle -  Back in the late 1800s, when the tide came in twice a day, the sewers would flow backward and toilets became fountains. True story.

Favorite city event -  Fremont Solstice Parade. Where else will you see naked painted bicyclists? Besides Portland.

Favorite historical resident -  Bertha Knight Landes, first female mayor of a major U.S. city. We love her so much, we named our giant tunnel-boring machine after her. What woman wouldn’t be flattered.

Favorite breakfast spot -  Portage Bay Cafe. Three words: unlimited berry bar.

Best view -  Kerry Park. You know that pretty picture of the Seattle skyline? It was taken here.

Favorite park -  Green Lake.

Go-to sports venue -  Century Link Field (the “Clink”).

Favorite movie theater -  Cinerama, a Seattle landmark (with beer!).

Favorite local shop -  Costco. Bet you didn’t see that coming!

Favorite coffee shop -  One of the three Starbucks in my office building. Or if I’m feeling anti-establishment, I’ll wade through the crowd of bike messengers to Monorail Espresso, next door.

Out-of-town guests are impressed with -  The flying fish at Pike Place Market. I don’t know why, either.
