Charleston’s JB Akers tells us what’s good in the neighborhood

Published in 2017 Virginia Super Lawyers Magazine — May 2017

BEST RESTAURANT  -  I love the owners at Mi Cocina de Amor. They do a lot for our community.

FAVORITE HISTORICAL FACT  -  In Kanawha County (a Native American name pronounced kuh-NAH-wuh), Daniel Boone was our first legislator to the Virginia State Assembly in 1791.

FAVORITE CITY EVENT  -  Live on the Levee, an outdoor summer concert series on our riverfront.

BEST PLACE TO GO AFTER A WIN  -  Wife and kids.

BEST PLACE TO GO AFTER A LOSS  -  Wife and kids.

FAVORITE COURTHOUSE PERK  -  My wife is a well-respected prosecutor. I get a lot of deference because of her.

FAVORITE THING ABOUT YOUR OFFICE (BESIDES THE PEOPLE)  -  My two dogs, who come to work with me every day.

FAVORITE PARK  -  Kanawha State Forest. Our kids have named a bunch of the landmarks, and it’s a fun place for us to spend time outdoors as a family.

GO-TO ARTS VENUE  -  The Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences. It’s a gem.

BEST PLACE FOR PEOPLE WATCHING  -  My office. My windows overlook a busy downtown street and I see lots of people I know walking by. Sometimes I’ll text them when they’ve made a bad clothing choice.

FAVORITE COFFEE SHOP  -  Never had a cup in my life—scout’s honor.

FAVORITE PIZZA JOINT  -  Lola’s. Walking distance from our house, and we’ve known the owners for a long time.

BEST CITY SPORTS MOMENT  -  I had a couple game-winning hits in church-league softball. You may have heard about them.

GO-TO SPORTS VENUE  -  West Virginia University for football and basketball.

MOST FAMOUS RESIDENT  -  Jennifer Garner. My wife went to high school with her, and we’ve met a few times. She’s as nice as she seems on TV.

BEST LOCAL FOLKLORE  -  Toss-up between John Henry and The Mothman, both of whom have stories that originated not far from here.

OUT-OF-TOWN GUESTS ARE IMPRESSED WITH  -  The friendly people. Come see us sometime.
