Local Counsel with Kristen E. Lonergan

The Wausau attorney tells us what’s good in the neighborhood

Published in 2016 Wisconsin Super Lawyers Magazine — December 2016

Best restaurant  -  Red Eye Brewing Company. Their locally sourced, frequently updated menu is full of flavor, and their microbrews are top-notch.

Weekend getaway  -  Door County, with stops including Cave Point County Park, Door County Brewing Co. and the Creamery.

Favorite city event  -  The Balloon Rally & Glow. This year, we had 24 hot air balloons lined up at sunset for a synchronized “glow” at the local airport. Amazing. I would love to someday hitch a ride.

Where to go after a win  -  Sconni’s Alehouse and Eatery. The wide range of beer, creative drink options and cheese curds are best enjoyed with friends in the city’s finest patio setting.

Where to go after a loss  -  Home. Just … home.

Favorite courthouse perk  -  The friendly, helpful staff and hometown feel.

Favorite thing about your office  -  The location—just steps away from the courthouse, coffee, good food and microbrews.

Favorite breakfast spot  -  The Urban Street Bistro food truck at the Saturday farmers markets.

Favorite lunch spot  -  Downtown Grocery. It suffered a devastating fire about a year ago, but at its temporary location, the lunch buffet—made of creative local, organic and vegetarian dishes—is still just as delicious!

Best place to reflect   -  The world-class Big Bull Falls professional whitewater kayaking course [now called Whitewater Park], right in our downtown. The rush of the rapids and the sound of the water help the mind go where it needs to go.

Best view   -  The lookout tower on top of Rib Mountain. You can see for miles.

Most famous resident   -  Former resident Marissa Mayer, CEO of Yahoo.

Go-to sports venue   -  Rib Mountain for downhill skiing, Nine Mile for cross-country skiing and mountain biking, the Wausau Curling Center for curling, or Athletic Park to cheer on the Woodchucks.

Go-to arts venue  -  The Grand Theater.

Most beautiful spot  -  On the path along Lillie Street in my neighborhood, the clearings in the trees provide breathtaking panoramic views of Rib Mountain and the Wisconsin River. This makes for some picture-perfect sunsets.

Best place for people-watching  -  Concerts on the Square.

Favorite local shop  -  Evolutions in Design.

Favorite coffeeshop  -  Patina Coffeehouse—a fabulous little place just steps away from my office.

Favorite pizza joint   -  Stoney Acres Farm, as featured on Wisconsin Foodie. Go there! I love my farmers!
