Founded in 1995, the law firm Kats, Jamison, van der Veen & Associates has established a reputation for significant jury verdicts and acquittals in high-profile criminal trials. This year, two of the firm’s attorneys have again been selected to Super Lawyers®. The firm’s practice areas cover personal injury, criminal defense, immigration, real estate and corporate law throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
TENACIOUS DEFENDER OF LIFE, LIBERTY AND PROPERTY
As an aggressive and passionate litigator, Michael van der Veen chairs the firm’s litigation department. Specializing in plaintiffs’ personal injury litigation and criminal defense, he has won multimillion-dollar jury verdicts in both state and federal courts. “As a litigator, I am driven to represent and be the voice of injured people whose lives have been shattered by devastating injuries,” he says. “In the criminal courts, it is a dogfight for people who are unjustly accused. There is nothing more important than my client’s liberty.”
Throughout the past decade, van der Veen has made his reputation in the courtroom. He is known to be in court for 10-12 hours a day. Other attorneys have marveled at how he wins cases in the criminal courts in the morning, the civil courts in the afternoon, and New Jersey courts at night. “I work, and I win,” he says. Currently, he is handling civil and criminal cases that have garnered local and national media coverage. van der Veen is in his seventh season as a legal expert on CN8’s Emmy-award winning talk program, It’s Your Call with Lynn Doyle.
ALWAYS CONCERNED FOR HER CLIENTS
Marina Kats specializes in protecting the rights of the injured in automobile accidents, construction accidents and premises liability cases. “Of the many things we ensure, one of the most important is giving clients our undivided attention,” says Kats. “I truly believe that before anything else, you have to care about the clients first, and then be willing to fight for them.” A member of the Philadelphia Trial Lawyers Association, Kats is also on the board of overseers of the Albert Einstein Healthcare Network. “I understand what my clients are going through from every perspective, including their medical care,” says Kats.
After graduating cum laude from Temple University and Temple University School of Law, Kats became one of only a handful of women in the country to receive a master of laws in trial advocacy. She currently teaches a seminar on leadership at Temple. She is also vice president to the President’s Advisory Board of Temple University. Kats hosts her own weekly radio program on WNWR, 1540 AM.
BRIGHT FUTURE
Kats, Jamison, van der Veen & Associates has seen consistent growth on its way to being a premier litigation firm in the region. Kats and van der Veen echo each other when they say “as our firm grows, our commitment to our clients never changes.”
