The Parade of the Northwest, every July during Water Carnival.

This is easy. The best local pizza is also the
best pizza in the country—a tie between Zorbaz and Lakeside.

Best courthouse perk

I have spent most of my 52 years in Detroit Lakes, and on one jury, I had the mechanic who sold me my first car, a high school classmate, the mother of a high school classmate, and my garbage collector, who was the jury foreman. And the judge called me Dave—my dad’s name. 

Best place to play hockey

Lincoln Rink, the outdoor skating rink run by the City of Detroit Lakes, was the best place for a pick-up hockey game. Teams were chosen by “sticks in the middle.” Skaters of all ages played together. The warming house was heated with a wood stove, and the attendant was often sleeping. Do not touch his radio! 

Favorite winter activity

Playing and watching hockey; skiing and teaching skiing. 

Favorite summer activity

Water skiing and riding mountain bikes. 

Favorite local shop

Lakes Sport Shop. I can buy a hunting license, hockey stick, outdoor clothing, water skis, snow skis, running shoes, a baseball glove, a fishing pole, the latest raffle tickets, and still have time for a haircut before lunch break is over. 

Favorite thing about your office

The view over Detroit Lake out the front windows!

Best place to reflect

Sitting on a dock. 

Favorite city law

It is legal to drive snowmobiles on city streets in Detroit Lakes.
