Weekend getaway – A cabin on any of the beautiful lakes in northern Minnesota.
Favorite lake – Lake Vermilion with its 40,000 acres of water, 365 islands, and 1,200 miles of shoreline. It stretches 40 miles across the heart of Minnesota’s Arrowhead Region. My family has enjoyed swimming, boating, water skiing, fishing and jumping in the lake after a sauna on Lake Vermilion for over 100 years.
Favorite thing about your office – It’s all in the family. I have the privilege of working with my dad, two uncles and my cousin.
Favorite coffee shop – The Shop Coffeehouse and Kunnari’s Farm Market in Virginia.
Favorite pizza joint – Dave’s Pizza in Virginia, a family-owned joint serving thin-crust pizza.
Best curling spot – Curl Mesabi in Eveleth, the home of Phill Drobnick: USA men’s curling coach, winner of the gold medal in Pyeongchang.
Favorite historical resident – Winemaker Robert Mondavi was born in Virginia.
Favorite park – Lake Vermilion Soudan Underground Mine State Park. Great camping, hiking, fishing and biking. You can also take the historic underground mine tour.
Place to take out-of-town guests – In the summer, Ely. It has wonderful shops and restaurants. You have access to the International Wolf Center, North American Bear Center and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. During the winter months, Giants Ridge, located in Biwabik, offers alpine and Nordic skiing along with tubing and fat-tire biking.
Best view – The view of the rugged slope of the mine pit and bluish-green water as you travel over the tallest MnDOT bridge into Virginia. It is our mini-Grand Canyon.
Favorite city event – The Land of the Loon ethnic arts and crafts festival celebrates the culture and customs of the people who settled in northern Minnesota.
Best place to reflect – Overlooking a lake in northern Minnesota after a good sauna.
