Structure and Release

By day, Jack Beesley navigates the emotional terrain of family law at Cowles & Thompson in Dallas. By night, he says, “I sit behind a drum kit, driving the rhythm for Pepper Theft, Dallas’ favorite Red Hot Chili Peppers cover band.”

Beesley started playing drums in the fourth grade, and has been a member in Pepper Theft for 19 years. “There’s something about rhythm—timing, listening, responding—that stuck with me,” he says.

Those instincts carried over after he graduated from law school in 2011 and realized the two worlds were connected. “In both the courtroom and on stage, success depends on reading the room, anticipating what comes next, and knowing when to lead and when to hold back,” Beesley says. “Family law requires patience, empathy, and the ability to stay steady under pressure. Drumming demands similar discipline, expressed through sound instead of words. Whether I’m guiding a client through a difficult case or locking into a groove during a live set, I rely on the same core skills.

“For me, law is structure; music is release. And somewhere between the two, I’ve found my rhythm.”
