The secret to Scott Bemberis’ golfing success: Keep chipping away

Scott Bemberis didn’t really pick up golf until law school at University of Richmond. He actually had a partial tennis scholarship, but a shoulder injury put the kibosh on competing in that sport, so he switched to golf. He was a quick study. Since then, Bemberis, a family law attorney at Clifford, Bemberis & Duke in Richmond, has won two Richmond Golf Association regular four-ball tournaments and two RGA senior four-ball championships (2022 and 2023). He also scored two Nelson Broach senior wins and had high finishes in two Virginia State Golf Association (VSGA) Mid-Amateur championships. He also qualified for the 2012 USGA Mid-Am and played in Chicago. Recently, he was qualifying medalist for the 2022 VSGA Senior-Am and finished fourth in the 2023 Virginia State Senior Open.

Bemberis had to get creative over the years to juggle golfing, his law career and family time. He credits his wife, this year’s cover subject, Stephanie Grana, with helping him carve out time for tournaments. On weekends, Bemberis would go to early morning practice, and in the summer, he would play evenings. “I’m lucky to have Providence Golf Club on the way home from the office so I could stop and hit a quick bucket or chip and putt,” he notes.

That, he feels, is the secret to his success. “Do a little something every day,” he says. “The secret to tournament golf is knowing yourself and managing your game. … Years of competing in tennis helped there.”

Golfing, he adds, has “given me a chance to compete, measure my game and improve, and make good, lifelong friends. It did not hurt with business, either.”
