BEST PLACE TO TAKE A CLIENT – Maple & Pine at the Quirk Hotel and Quirk Gallery. Not just because my partner Jennifer Mullen worked on that development, but because it is the coolest place to be on any given night.
BEST CITY EVENT – The Richmond Folk Festival and the UCI Road [Cycling] World Championships are both pretty amazing. But don’t ever miss the Lebanese Food Festival. All other food festivals are just pretenders.
BEST QUOTE ABOUT RICHMOND – “I walked down Monument Avenue: Those are a lot of second place trophies, way to go!” If you can’t laugh at yourself, you should laugh with Robin Williams.
BEST PLACE FOR A STROLL – Anywhere my wife Anne-Marie is.
BEST TRIVIA FACTOID – The Richmond Highland Games & Celtic Festival featured ferret-legging competitions, where contestants put a ferret in their pants and see how long they could endure it. Seriously.
COOLEST HISTORICAL RESIDENT – Take your pick: Patrick Henry, John Marshall, Thomas Jefferson (he was governor, so that counts), Maggie Walker, Edgar Allan Poe, Oliver Hill. But for me, it’s all about Arthur Ashe.
BEST HISTORICAL SITE – Hanover Tavern. It’s nearly 300 years old and has hosted Patrick Henry, George Washington, Marquis de Lafayette and Lord Cornwallis.
BEST ARTS VENUE – The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. It has international exhibits (Rodin, Faberge, Picasso), shows and hands-on programs, a great restaurant, art and dance classes, a library, a great shop. On and on.
BEST WATERING HOLE – Rare Olde Times, Southern Railway Taphouse and Triple Crossing Brewing Company—honestly, the only way I can get street cred around here.
BEST POST-WIN MEAL – Whatever is closest, as it is usually a late night. Rancho T and anywhere [restaurateurs] Ed Vasaio or Johnny Giavos operate, I’ll be there.
BEST LOCAL AUTHOR – So many. Edgar Allan Poe, Douglas Southall Freeman, Tom Wolfe, Patricia Cornwell. My favorite is David Baldacci.
BEST PEOPLE WATCHING – The State Fair, but that only comes around once a year, and it’s usually raining. On a daily basis, it has to be Carytown and the VCU School of the Arts.
BEST CUP OF JOE – I don’t drink coffee, which is a bit surprising given I went to law school and have four kids.
BEST MUSIC VENUE – The Camel. The music scene here is outstanding.
BEST BREAKFAST – The Citizen. Fresh ingredients, changing menu and great owner. [Chef] Greg is a savant with the egg.
BEST SLICE – For lunch, Jo-Jo’s Pizza which has a NYC attitude (just hesitate while ordering and you’ll see what I mean). For dinner, Anthony’s on the Hill.
BEST THING ABOUT YOUR OFFICE – The people. One end of the office is loud 75 percent of the time and the other end is completely quiet 90 percent of the time. You can probably guess which end I’m on.
