Pedaling a Cure for Multiple Sclerosis

By Dwight Hobbes

That's what David Pollock does every year on his spring bike outing

When it comes to raising money for the fight against multiple sclerosis, some people put their money where their mouth is. David Pollock of Pollock Begg Komar Glasser in Pittsburgh puts his money where his foot is.

Every spring since 1992, Pollock, along with a group of buddies, solicits donations to cover a two-day 150-mile bike ride to fund MS research. The trips are a blast and beautiful; on them he's pedaled through western Pennsylvania, Virginia, New Jersey, Ohio, Kentucky. They're also a lot of aching work. All worth it, he insists. "We love adventures."

They've had a few. "We've taken our mountain bikes on a path that narrowed to nothing, and the only way out is to walk backwards on the narrow path with a drop-off to a river below or a cliff above. We did not tell our wives about that for a while," he says.

So far Pollock and his buddies have raised more than $50,000 with these rides; not bad for something they enjoy doing.

"The idea is to inspire others to get out and bike," he says. "It's so much fun."

What people are saying

"My Platinum profile ad has definitely paid off! My law firm is a boutique five-attorney law firm in San Francisco that had never advertised prior to this, except in Martindale-Hubbel. We have been a traditional insurance defense firm, and wanted to subtly let people know that we also do select plaintiff's cases. In the last quarter of 2006, we were retained in three significant plaintiff's cases, two of which are high-profile media cases. I also placed an ad in the Super Lawyers section of San Francisco magazine, to reach non- lawyers. Now, people at the gym, the coffee shop, the drycleaners tell me they had no idea what I do, and they will come to me when they need a lawyer. So, the ad also worked to reach non-lawyers in the community as well."
