Best city sports moment – A tie: Wichita State University’s advancement to the Final Four in 2013, and Nico Hernandez winning the bronze medal in boxing at the Rio Olympic Games in 2016.
Worst city sports moment – October 2, 1970. The day the plane carrying Wichita State football players and coaches crashed. Thirty-one lives were lost, including 14 players.
Go-to arts venue – Orpheum Theatre. It hosts concerts, films, musicals, comedians and more. It’s rich with history—built in 1922, it was the first atmospheric theater in the United States.
Favorite park – Sedgwick County Park. It spans 645 acres.
Favorite breakfast spot – Doo-Dah Diner. This is the place to go for the best crab cake benedict.
Favorite courthouse perk – Fast Pass, a courthouse-entry access card that allows attorneys to bypass screening when entering the building.
Favorite local shop – Lucinda’s, a women’s boutique with a diverse selection of clothing, jewelry, home décor and fun, off-the-wall gifts.
Best place for people watching – The outdoor deck at Loft 150.
Favorite pizza joint – Picasso’s Pizzeria. They serve the best New York-style slices and pies.
Favorite thing about your office (besides the people) – The 5 p.m. hallway golf tournaments.
Favorite lunch spot – Tanya’s Soup Kitchen—excellent food made from locally sourced ingredients.
Go-to sports venue – Intrust Bank Arena, which will host the first and second rounds of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament next year.
Favorite historical fact – In 1958, Wichita’s Dockum Drug Store was the site of one of the first organized sit-ins in America, which helped change the civil rights path of the nation.
Favorite watering hole – Wichita Brewing Company.
Favorite lesser-known tourist attraction – The Museum of World Treasures.
Favorite building – Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.
Best place to take a client – Siena Tuscan Steakhouse.
Favorite city event – Wichita Riverfest, a 10-day outdoor festival with water sports, races, a parade, a river run, concerts, food, vendors and more.
Best place for a stroll – Sedgwick County Zoo.
