The Skimm
iOS, Web Free
Each morning, in the time it takes to brush my teeth, I skim The Skimm, a news digest that delivers a smart, witty summary of national and international news stories, along with enough entertainment and sports to keep me in the loop at my networking functions. In addition to providing an early morning news brief, the app really ups my marketing game, and integrates with my Outlook calendar so that I am aware of upcoming political, sporting and entertainment events—together with holidays—so that I can be mindful of my clients’ observances and interests. There are also the Skimm Guides, which provide in-depth summaries of various subjects. Last year’s guides included a 2016 Supreme Court Roundup, College Football Playoffs, Brexit, Acronyms You Pretend to Know and Equal Pay. While the app is available for iOS only at this time, the news summaries and guides can be delivered to your email daily via free subscription at theskimm.com.

CosmoLex
iOS, Android $49/month
As a real estate attorney, it’s important to keep track of each file—especially when you’re dealing with multiple parties. Even more critical is tracking deposits and proceeds from sales and purchases. Every attorney has a fiduciary duty to their client to safeguard their funds; a real estate attorney must also safeguard and keep track of funds that are technically not their client’s yet, i.e., deposits from buyers. That’s why I use CosmoLex, cloud-based practice-management software. It helps me keep track of clients, their files, billable hours and most importantly, funds in my trust. It allows me to print checks directly from the application via my trust account. CosmoLex is also audit-proof. In the state of New Jersey, each practicing attorney who maintains a trust account is subject to a random audit by the Office of Attorney Ethics. This can be stressful, especially since most attorneys are unsure what the word “reconciliation” means. CosmoLex makes this process painless by allowing you to reconcile with a click of a button.
