Social Casino App Losses: How To Recover Money From Unregulated Apps

By John Devendorf, Esq. | Reviewed by Canaan Suitt, J.D. | Last updated on April 14, 2026

Playing online slot machines or poker can offer a fun diversion. In some states, players can even use online casinos to make real money. However, real-money online casinos are highly restricted. This leaves some players turning to unregulated online casinos in search of a chance to win extra cash.

Using unregulated casino apps can be risky when you fund the account with your financial and personal information. Some online scams will take your deposit and give you no way to get your money back. If you lose money on a social casino app, talk to a consumer law attorney about your legal rights.

Understanding Online Casino Gambling

Online casinos and sportsbooks let players bet on slot machines and games that previously required visiting an in-person casino. Legal gambling is generally limited to a few locations in the U.S., including Nevada, Atlantic City, Native American tribal lands, and riverboat casinos.

Online casinos allow gamers to play these games from anywhere. But players must understand that many of these online and social casino games are not licensed to operate in their state. States still regulate gaming and gambling.

Online gambling platforms using real money are illegal in most states. As of March 2026, only eight states license online gambling sites, including:

  1. Connecticut
  2. Delaware
  3. Maine
  4. Michigan
  5. New Jersey
  6. Pennsylvania
  7. Rhode Island
  8. West Virginia

State gambling laws can vary based on the type of online gaming. There are often exceptions for sports betting. The legality of sweepstakes casinos and social casinos varies by state. Some states ban these dual-currency casino models, while others do not consider them illegal gambling.

Sweepstakes Casinos and Social Casino Apps

Social casino apps and sweepstakes casinos are like gambling-related casino games, but using virtual coins, chips, or tokens instead of real money.

Players can get additional chips or coins by watching ads or winning games. However, players must also use real money to buy additional tokens or for in-app purchases. Players cannot generally make real money through social casino apps.

Many of these social casino apps are largely unregulated. They may use deceptive practices to get you to keep investing more money with no chance of getting a payout. Gamblers may continue pouring money into the unregulated apps to chase their gambling losses, without any chance of getting their money back.

Legalized Online Sportsbooks

The majority of states allow online sports betting. Many of these states consider sports betting to be a game of skill rather than illegal gambling.

Some states also require sports wagering to use player pools or sweepstakes instead of betting against the house. Before making online sports bets, check your state’s gambling laws.

Chargeback Through Your Credit Card

If you act quickly, you may be able to reverse a credit card payment through a chargeback. The credit card company can issue a chargeback for unauthorized or fraudulent purchases. After making a credit card deposit, you may have a dispute with the online casino. The credit card company can charge back the funds, essentially reversing your payment.

A credit card company will not just issue a chargeback for any reason. There are specific limitations for chargebacks. If you’re using a licensed gaming app and simply lost money, the credit card company will generally not do a chargeback. Credit card merchant codes generally indicate that the merchant operates a gambling or gaming site.

There is also a time limit to do a chargeback, depending on the bank or card company, usually 60 to 120 days. Check with your credit card company about the time limit for filing a chargeback request.

To start a chargeback, contact your bank or credit card company and explain the invalid charge. The bank will review your claim and notify the merchant. The online casino can respond to show that the charge was valid or authorized. Your bank will review the case and make a dispute resolution decision, granting or denying the chargeback.

Signs of a Social Casino App Scam

Before entering any personal information or financial data, or clicking any links, make sure you understand the risks. Some social casino scams use social media, text messages, and email phishing to trick users into entering their personal information or credit card numbers.

Beware of offers that seem too good to be true. Scammers also often ask for payments in gift cards or crypto, which makes it harder for you to get your money back. Online casinos can also use advance-fee scams, requiring real deposits to verify accounts and withdraw winnings.

Charges From Unauthorized Use of Your Account

Some bettors may lose money to online gaming apps because someone else hacked their accounts. If you think someone has used your online account, change your passwords immediately.

Contact the gaming app to report that your account was hacked, and notify your bank or credit card company to dispute any unauthorized withdrawals. You can also contact the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at IdentityTheft.gov.

Use cybersecurity best practices when dealing with an online account that has access to your personal data and financial information. This includes avoiding open Wi-Fi networks, using multi-factor authentication, and using virtual private networks (VPNs). Use strong passwords and change your passwords regularly.

Responsible Gambling Options

People with a gambling addiction may have trouble controlling their online gaming. Most states require licensed gambling operators to offer deposit limits and self-exclusion registration to limit access for people with problem gambling.

If the gaming casino does not have a self-exclusion option, it may not be licensed to operate in your state.

For unregulated apps and illegal online casinos, you may have limited legal options to recover your money. If the online casino is licensed to operate in your state, you have more of a chance to get some money back. You can take legal action and file a lawsuit against the gaming platform for fraud or deceptive business practices.

You can also report the issues to your state gaming commission. The gaming commission can assess financial penalties. Some states have also filed lawsuits against online gaming and sportsbook sites for violating consumer protection laws. For legal advice about how you can recover money from social casino losses, contact a local consumer law attorney.
