According to data provided by the United States Census Bureau, there are approximately 18 million military veterans nationwide. All veterans need access to the full and fair benefits promised in connection to their service. You may be wondering: What type of financial support is available to vets and their families in Ohio? In this article, you will find an overview of the levels of eligibility for veterans’ benefits.

An Overview of Eligibility for Veterans Benefits in Ohio

Many military service members have questions about their eligibility for federal benefits offered by the VA. Here is a brief explanation of qualification standards for some of the most important financial benefits offered through the Department of Veterans Affairs:

  • Health Care Benefits: Through the VA, veterans can receive no-cost health care coverage for service-related injuries, illnesses and impairments. Combat veterans are often eligible for additional health care benefits.
  • Disability Benefits: If you or your loved one suffered a disabling injury or developed a disabling medical condition in the line of service, disability compensation is available in the form of VA benefits. These benefits are paid out based on several factors, with a disabled veteran’s assigned “disability rating” being of major importance.
  • Pension Benefits: VA pension benefits, military retirement pay, are generally reserved for veterans who received a honorable discharge and are 65 years of age or older and have little/no income, or veterans under the age of 65 who have a serious injury, illness or disabling medical condition.
  • Survivor Benefits: The primary type of VA survivors’ benefit is called Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (VA DIC). If your immediate family member was killed in the line of active duty or passed away due to a military-related injury/illness, surviving spouses may be eligible for monthly DIC payments.

There are other veterans benefits available as well, including federally subsidized home loans, tuition assistance through the G.I. bill and other education benefits through the Ohio G.I. Promise. If you are a Ohio resident The Ohio Department of Veterans Services (DVS) and the County Veterans Service Office are the state government agencies in the State of Ohio responsible for helping U.S. active-duty service members, veterans, and their families navigate the system.

You Can Appeal the Denial of Your VA Benefits

Sadly, many U.S. armed forces veterans have a hard time getting the benefits that they earned through their military service. A first time rejection for enrollment of your benefits is not necessarily the end of the process. You can appeal the denial of VA claim. As an example, if you feel that your veterans pension benefits were miscalculated or wrongfully denied, you can request reconsideration by the VA.

If you are an Ohio state veteran and have specific questions or concerns about the level of eligibility for VA benefits, do not hesitate to reach out to an experienced Ohio veterans’ benefits attorney for guidance and support. A lawyer can review your case and help determine the exact steps you need to take to get the full and fair VA benefits that you and your family deserve.
